Water Line Repair

water line repair plumber in birmingham, alamabamDo you suspect that you may have an underground water leak because of an unusual increase in your monthly sewer bill or because of a wet spot in your yard that never seems to dry?

Here is the fastest and easiest way to tell if you are losing water anywhere in your water distribution system from the meter throughout every faucet and fixture in your home.  First make sure that all faucets and fixtures in your home are not in use and that all toilet tanks are full.

Once you are sure that there is no current demand for water anywhere in the home, go out to the water meter serving your home and very carefully remove the lid.  Some meter lids have smaller access lids.  We recommend removing the entire lid because you will likely have to reach down into the meter box in order to lift the flap that covers the meter face.  We suggest wearing heavy gloves and removing the entire lid so that you can see everything that is in the meter box.  Over the years we have found all sorts of surprises lurking in meter boxes including snakes, numerous black widow spiders, colonies of cock roaches, as well as other less dangerous "creepy crawlers".  Once you have gained sufficient access so that you can see the face of the meter, look for what is called a "tumbler".  A "tumbler" is simply a flow indicator.  When water is passing through the meter the tumbler will spin.  If a relatively small amount of water is passing through the meter then the tumbler will spin slowly.  If a large amount of water is passing through the meter then the tumbler will spin very quickly.  The tumbler is usually triangle shaped or sometimes star shaped.  Very rarely we will encounter meters that have no tumbler.  With no demand for water anywhere in the house the tumbler should remain completely still.  You may have to watch the tumbler for 30 seconds to 1 minute to make sure there is no movement because sometimes they will "skip", that is, the tumbler will remain still for a while and then move a bit and then stop again.  Tumblers can go back and forth like this indicating a small but very real leak.  If you have found that you have a leak somewhere but are unsure where, call us.  Water leaks can require something as small as a valve adjustment all the way up to complete water service replacement.  The Master's Plumbing Company has the training and the skill to track down your leak wherever it may be.
